How did DualStream help your work on Journey 3D?
Stereo VFX work requires careful examination of the image. If you have a comp with 50 elements in it, and just one of them is wrong, it can take a long time to find it. FrameCycler gave me the ability to find these things in my own time without having to render out shots over and over, or take up valuable theater time for every little detail.
So review has to be that much more precise in stereo.
With 3D VFX there is almost no room for cheating. That's what makes it such a challenge. In 2D you can adjust the black levels and the size of an object and it looks like it's further away. In 3D you have to place each object correctly in Z-space. It's incredible how sensitive your eye is to these things: just a few sub-pixels here or there and it looks off. That's where FrameCycler was such a big help.
How does stereo change VFX and filmmaking?
Not to be cliché, but stereo really does give you a whole new dimension to play with. Stereo is as important as any other element, such as your color palette, the soundscape, or editing. Some of the facilities we worked with wanted to do their shots like they always had and then 'add the stereo at the end.' But you can't do that. Stereo is integral: you have to work with it from the beginning.
How is the industry doing in terms of the artistry of stereo?
We're already doing good work, but as we get more familiar with it, we'll find better and better ways to use this tool. It would be interesting, for example, to start stereo films 'flatter' and then gradually bring in the stereo dimension as the audience gets into the story.
What do you think of Journey 3D?
It's a great adventure movie, a lot of fun and the early reviews are very positive. We didn't add stereo as a gimmick: we made a stereo feature film. And, with respect to the use of GC and live action imagery, we have definitely pushed the envelope for stereo filmmaking. It was a huge challenge, but we can thank FrameCycler for helping make that possible.
Thanks, Chris! We're delighted be have been along for the ride and we wish you every success on your next projects!
