Making the Medium More Confortable
George C. Palmer, CPBE
Digital Imaging Engineer, Palmyra, USA
Digital Imaging Engineer George Palmer has been working
with video throughout his career. Along with producer and management
roles, he has been a technical director, video engineer, and colorist.
Today, based in Las Vegas, George provides consulting and production
services for film and television. On the broadcast front, George has
been involved in major productions such as the 2002 Winter Olympics in
Salt Lake City. Recent feature film projects include Miami Vice,
and Home of the Brave.
"There are two sides to this business: the artist
side and the engineering side. I've been a video operator/colorist all
my life, so that's where I am coming from. For me, the purpose of on
set coloring is to previsualize unprocessed images such as FilmStream
and HDStream DI camera outputs. I use it as a teaching tool, especially
as "peace-of-mind" for people who are not used to seeing those dual-link
images, to assure them of the potential for those frames."
George has worked with SpeedGrade OnSet since it was
first released. "The 2006 version of SpeedGrade OnSet is a big step
forward: not just the interface design and the new LUT export
capabilities, but I find that the controls work better and more
smoothly."
The simplicity of SpeedGrade OnSet appeals.
"Sometimes a competing product will be used in a production, but
whenever that happens, it always seems to come with a colorist attached!
That may work in some situations, but I think SpeedGrade OnSet is
perfect precisely because I don't need all that overhead. I can run it
on a laptop."
George Palmer uses SpeedGrade OnSet with E-Cinema and
Cine-Tal monitors, with the LUTher, and with Viper cameras.
Even if a post facility is not using SpeedGrade, I
still use it. SpeedGrade OnSet allows me to work with FilmStream and
HDStream to demonstrate, on set, the broad latitude of those mediums and
their potential for the final look of a production. It makes the new
medium more comfortable for the creative people."
