Expanding the Tool Set
Caroline Brandes

Toronto-based cinematographer Caroline Brandes has honed
her craft in Canada, the United States, and her native Germany. Working
as a freelance cinematographer, and with her production company,
Luminist Films, Caroline is equally at home with film and digital
technologies.
"I will probably always prefer the warmth and
subtleties of film, but digital technologies do give me that much more
to work with - even for projects shot on film. For the last film I shot
35mm, 16mm and S-8. Each stock was used to capture a specific look as
the story traveled back in time from the present to the 1980's."
Much of Caroline's work has been in independent films
where creativity and efficiency are critical in getting quality results
with modest budgets. "So much of the success of a project is
determined by my work with the director during preproduction. This is
when we determine the look of the film. With SpeedGrade OnSet we can do
that right up front - and save the looks for review and refinement as we
go through production."
"Previsualisation is the magic word for me when it
comes to developing a visual concept for a film. That used to be limited

ideas with my director in a very concrete way."
"I find digital technologies also helpful in

like, especially when you are on a tight budget, where every minute in
the colorist's suite counts. In the past, I used every means I could
think of to get my ideas across to the post people but it always felt
