Not only has soccer fever hit the sports world, it has affected the world of advertising as well.  Colorado FX provided visual effects services for Pocari Sweat’s commercial spot “Soccer,” directed by Level 7’s Sandy Collora.

The underwater soccer game is the theme for the Japanese soft drink, Pocari Sweat, through Asatsu DK.  The shoot was divided into two days, one done on a greenscreen stage, while the other was done underwater with a greenscreen background.

Colorado’s VFX supervisor Paul Kirsch, and his compositing team used Discreet Flame and Fire to composite several layers involving the replication of underwater shots.  The 3D team of artists at Colorado FX was led by CG supervisor Oliver Hotz, who used a combination of Maya and LightWave, along with the Beaver Project and Sasquatch to create the soccer field, as well as water bubbles and the addition of background players.

FrameCycler Professional was used during post production for shot review and analysis.

Colorado was able to achieve a completely different look with the same toolset for a commercial for Cingular Wireless.

The commercial, directed by Pat Solomon, features two skateboarders perfoming tricks on a white ramp.  One skater attaches a can of spray paint to the bottom of his skateboard.  He hits the half-pipe with a leap, spraying orange paint while showing off his moves, eventually forming an elaborate graphic design.

While on set at the Chandler Studios in Van Nuys, CG Supervisor Oliver Hotz, along with Bob Wilson and Levi Asay, placed several tracking markers on the ramp.  Hotz explains, “by placing the markers strategically, we were able to track the plates and matchmove the skateboard.”

During post production, VFX Supervisor Paul Kirsch used Discreet Flame to paint out all traces of the markers.  The digital artists used Newtek’s LightWave to create the CG paint line and CG paint vapor from the spray can.  Compositing was completed in Flame.
