Inition’s StereoBrain Helps Transform SpeedGrade 3D Post

Inition will present the latest version of the StereoBrain Processor, a 3D HD video processing unit created for stereoscopic 3D production, post and broadcast, on stand 4.C70 at the IBC this year (September 11-14). Developed by Inition and broadcast video experts NuMedia, the StereoBrain has been helping to transform the 3D production process since its launch at NAB earlier this year.

The StereoBrain (SB-1) is designed to allow live viewing of a stereoscopic camera pair or other genlocked 3D video source on any of the current breed of 3D televisions. This enables live 3D monitoring or 3D viewing in post-production environments from any 3D pair of HD-SDI sources.

In the post production environment 3D viewing often wasn’t possible or affordable before the StereoBrain Processor. IRIDAS, the leading software developer for playback, colour correction, and workflow automation have been using StereoBrain technology in conjunction with its FrameCycler DI and SpeedGrade XR/DI products.

Patrick Palmer of IRIDAS commented: “IRIDAS FrameCycler DI and SpeedGrade XR/DI allow for driving all current 3D stereo display technologies including TI pattern (Samsung, Mitsubishi), interlaced scanlines (Hyundai, JVC) and Dual SDI projection systems. While this is sufficient for direct 3D monitoring, it presents a problem for setups where both, reference monitoring as well as 3D monitoring is required. Without the Stereobrain, Dual SDI output can’t be combined easily with systems such as the Samsung and JVC type of displays.”

“Current video hardware is not designed to handle 3D images but the ability to view and manipulate 3D pairs of HD sources is an essential tool for 3D production. We have just completed the post for a 3D advertising campaign including conform, colour grade, 3D fixing and depth. Using the StereoBrain with the IRIDAS Speedgrade 3D suite, the result was a seamless stereoscopic workflow allowing us to make the small adjustments necessary to provide the optimum 3D viewing experience whilst viewing live on a 3D TV.”

At IBC the StereoBrain is being demonstrated in the live monitoring environment with a live 3D camera system on Inition’s stand (4.C70) and in the post production set up on the IRIDAS stand (7.H11). Future models of the StereoBrain Processor will launch in Q1, 2010 and will support a range of sophisticated 3D video processing functions including the ability to shift convergence live and additional features to align and monitor stereoscopic 3D sources.

StereoBrain Specifications
The SB-1 outputs the pair of images via a single DVI/HDMI signal in a range of common 3D formats used by the current crop of 3D TVs. It can also output anaglyph and overlayed left/right on a standard 2D HD monitor. Both side-by-side and mirror/beam-splitter rigs are also supported with the latter via a built-in flip function.

How exactly is the Stereobrain Processor used in a 3D post monitoring setup with SpeedGrade?
The signal processing can be arranged like this: The left and right output from the nVidia SDI card can go into left and right or combined Waveform monitoring, then into a single or 2 reference monitors without 3D capabilities. This is where you usually can’t extend the signal chain to any 3D display but Dual SDI projectors (or two projectors). With the Stereobrain, the viewing options after regular colour accurate monitoring and signal monitoring are practically unlimited, as if you were driving it directly from within SpeedGrade.
